How often have you driven past Thirlmere on your way to Keswick or Grasmere and not stopped to look at the natural beauty
of this most tranquil spot?
Why not?
Probably because as you drive along the main road past the lake there is very little
to be seen because of the rows of conifers blocking the view! These conifers were planted during the early part of the
20th Century to stabilise the shores of Lake Thirlmere after it became a reservoir in 1894. Since that time the trees have
grown tall and obscure most of the view of this lovely lake.
However things have now changed. The trees around the lake are the responsibility of United Utilities who own much of
the land in the area. United Utilities have now completed their program to remove many of these conifers which are
considered to be non native to the area and return the woodlands to their "natural state". This commenced during
2006 and was completed early, almost a year ahead of schedule.
Along the main A591 Keswick to Ambleside Road the lake is
once again fully visible from the road as it was around 100 years ago.
We have taken these pictures to show you how the work progressed and give an indication of how the
Lake Thirlmere area has changed during the the last few months.
Lake Thirlmere is the Lake District's most central lake and Dale Head Hall Lakeside Hotel is THE ONLY hotel (and indeed
habited property) on the lake shores.
